# Connectors

Connectors give the Notara agent — and any MCP callers — access to external tools. When a connector is active, the agent can search, read, create, and update data in the connected service, subject to tool permission rules.

## Two Types of Connectors

### BYOK Connectors

You provide the API key. Your key is encrypted at rest in Notara and used only to make calls on your behalf. You have full control over the key and can revoke it at any time.

Examples: Apify, Linear, GitHub, Stripe, Replicate, ChartMogul, Email, custom HTTP. Provider usage is billed separately to your connected account.

### Platform Connectors

On paid workspaces, Notara provides a key for Firecrawl and Perplexity, subject to fair use. You can optionally connect your own key. Free does not include connected tool execution.

Examples: Firecrawl (web crawling), Perplexity (web research).

## Available Connectors

| Connector | Type | What It Does |

| **Remote MCP** | BYOK | Connect any external MCP server |

## How to Connect a Connector

1. In the Notara dashboard, navigate to **Tools** in the sidebar.
2. Find the connector you want to add. Use the search or scroll through the grid.
3. Click the connector tile to open its setup panel.
4. For BYOK connectors: paste your API key into the credentials field and click **Connect**.
5. For Platform connectors: click **Enable** — no credentials required.

Once connected, the connector's tools immediately become available to the agent in any channel or MCP endpoint that has this connector enabled.

## Tool Capabilities

Every tool has a capability level that determines how it's handled by the permission system:

| Capability | Default Permission | Effect |
| ------------- | --------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------- |
| `read` | Open — executes immediately | No friction for safe read operations |
| `write` | Requires approval | Admin receives a Slack DM with Approve/Deny buttons |
| `destructive` | Admin only + confirm | Any user sees an in-channel confirm prompt; admins see it too |

You can override defaults for any tool from **Settings → Permissions**.

## Managing Connected Services

To update credentials or disconnect a service:

1. Go to **Tools** in the sidebar.
2. Click the connected tool's tile.
3. To update credentials: paste the new key and click **Save**.
4. To disconnect: click **Disconnect**. This revokes the stored credentials and removes the tool from the agent.

Disconnecting a connector does not delete any context documents that were created using that connector (e.g., Firecrawl-crawled pages remain in your library).

## Platform Connector Keys

Firecrawl and Perplexity can use Notara-provided keys on paid workspaces, subject to fair use. Apify requires your own Apify account and API key. Apify usage is billed separately by Apify and is not included in your Notara subscription.

To use your own Firecrawl or Perplexity key, open that connector in **Tools** and configure a workspace key. Usage on your key is billed by the provider.

See the [Apify guide](/notara-docs/connectors/apify.md) for workflow setup and billing.
